The Origin of Father's Day
Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington State proposed the idea of the "Father's Day" in 1909 to honor her father, William Smart. Mr. Smart, a Civil War veteran, raised his 6 children (including Sonora) by himself on a rural farm in Eastern Washington State after his wife (Sonora's mother) died in childbirth with their 6th child.
The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. At about the same time in various towns and cities across USA, the other people began to celebrate the Father's Day. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day, but it took many years until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson finally signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of every June.
Father's Day has become a day to not only honor your father, but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends are all be honored on Father's Day.

For my Father........

From the moment I came into this world
The one fact I was certain of
I had a mother and a father
I was a product of their love.
The birthing of a child, as we all know
It's an enormous mommy thing!
The father tends to get lost in the shuffle
As she begins the beauty of nurturing
In her shadow, standing tall and silently proud
The father gently steps to her side
He smiles as he touches the tiny hand
His heart's bursting with so much pride
In that very instant, he makes promises
Quiet ones that no one else hears
"I will love and care for you forever...
I will protect you from all fears."
Looking back with fondest memories
Years have past, and now I'm grown
I appreciate all my father has done for me
Because I have a child of my own.
I know the depths of the love he felt
I know why sometimes he was stern
I remember him watching from the door as I slept
Many things from him, I've learned.
So on this Father's Day I need to say
Thanks for the promises you made long ago
I am honored you are my father!
I just wanted you to know!

Butterfly Kisses
There's two things I know for sure. She was sent here from heaven, and she's daddy's little girl. As I drop to my knees by her bed at night, she talks to Jesus, and I close my eyes. And I thank God for all of the joy in my life, But most of all, for...
Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer. Stickin' little white flowers all up in her hair. "Walk beside the pony daddy, it's my first ride." "I know the cake looks funny, daddy, but I sure tried." Oh, with all that I've done wrong, I must have done something right To deserve a hug every morning, And butterfly kisses at night.
Sweet sixteen today, She's looking like her momma a little more everyday. One part woman, the other part girl. To perfume and makeup, form ribbons and curls. Trying her wings out in a great big world. But I remember...
Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer. Stickin' little white flowers all up in her hair. "You know how much I love you daddy, But if you don't mind, I'm only going to kiss you on the cheek this time." With all that I've done wrong I must have done something right. To deserve her love every morning, And butterfly kisses at night.
All the precious time Like the wind, the years go by Precious butterfly Spread your wings and fly She'll change her name today. She'll make a promise, and I'll give her away. Standing in the bride room just staring at her, she asked me what I'm thinking, and I said "I'm not sure, I just feel like I'm losing my baby girl." Then she leaned over....an gave me....
Butterfly kisses, with her mama there Sticking little flowers all up in her hair "Walk me down the aisle, daddy, it's just about time" "Does my wedding gown look pretty, daddy?" "Daddy, don't cry." With all that I've done wrong, I must have done something right To deserve her love every morning, And butterfly kisses I couldn't ask God for more, man, this is what love is I know I've gotta let her go, but I'll always remember Every hug in the morning, and butterfly kisses...
